President Jacob Zuma has promised to release without bail or parole prisoners who have committed lesser serious crimes. This is president Zuma’s gift to South Africans this festive season.
Zuma stated that this will help the Department of Correctional Services reduce the number of prisoners in South African jails,as they are overcrowded.
Research has proven that most prisons are operating at over 250% capacity and they are in very poor conditions.
Earlier this month‚ the High Court in Cape Town ordered the government to try to reduce overcrowding to at least 120%.
“Most inmates will be set free as from the 22nd of December 2016. Those given a second chance, should be home before Christmas. So be ready to spend Christmas with your uncle this year.” said President Zuma.
